Will our house insurance cover us?

Hi, we have just discovered in our newly built home that the lower part of one of the inner walls in the downstairs hallway is damp. The paint work is damp and the skirting has risen out from the wall. Upon further investigation we noticed that this dampness has also contintued into one of the adjoining bedrooms. We believe that more than likely this dampness is coming from a burst / leaking pipe as the wall is not near a shower or under the upstairs shower. We were obivously very upset when we noticed this and are having an engineer to look at the problem tomorrow. Im honsetly very afraid to contact my house insurance company with this problem as Im not sure if would be covered for this or even of the procedure involved!
Your help would be very much appreciated
Thanks!

You need to check the terms & conditions of your insurance policy to see if this problem is likely to be covered. Nobody can tell you for sure from this remove.

Should this not have been seen when a snag list / survey was completed prior to purchase?

The house was a direct labour self build, we didnt cutback on costs by getting the cheapest builders and materials as we got alot of the work done by people who were recommended to us.

the people who did the work will be covered under thier insurance - it would have been a prerequisite of you building in course of construction house insurance

Many of the "tradespeople" are not insured - many people don't bother with insurance whilst constructing a house . The plumber will blame the floor screeder who will blame the door fitter who will blame the dpc. You will be going from one to the other and getting nowhere. Hopefully the engineer will be able to give you some idea. The plumber should be able to detect a leak under the floor - whether he will fix it for free is another matter. Hopefully he will if he wants to keep his reputation. The probelm with direct labour on a self build - as I have found - is that the builders/ tradespeople are not that bothered - you will probably not be using them again. They are more bothered about their regular employers - the contractors and developers. They have no real reason to do a good job for a one off build by someone who may never need them again.

Good luck with the leak/damp
We had similar problems (didn't sound as serious as yours) - and it was the doors and the joints/seals around the floor.
