What's an offer with conditions?

I e-mailed an enquiry to an auctioneer to ask if there were any offers on a house they were selling. They replied with the current offer and said the offer was "unconditional".

What exactly does this mean, do people sometimes make offers on houses which have conditions attached? If so, what conditions do people sometimes attach to their offer on a house?

A conditional offer could refer to the bidders needing to sell their own house or being granted mortgage approval or it could mean that they're awaiting the results of a survey on the house.

[No-one-home]

They could also make and an offer subject to a time limit i.e. "we offer €500,000 subject to acceptance before 25th. Dec." otherwise the offer lapses.

There are I'm sure numorous more possible conditions.
