Hi, Hopefully just got job caring for 2 elderly people in their home. The hours are all weekend starting from Friday evening to Monday morning. I will be staying at the home for the whole time. They want me to give them price, and Im not sure what the going rate is. I am a qualified nurse, however the work is fairly minimal. They seem lovely people, and I dont want to charge too high. Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks Sarah.

Could be anything - try somewhere between 100 and 200 euro per 24 hour day. We pay a little more to an agency but that includes all their overheads - holidays etc...............

I think the rates quoted above are very low. At one stage I know that "temporary resident carers" overnighting in a client's home got a €75 / night overnight allowance, gross (x 3 for Fri Sat Sun = €225 gross), plus their hourly rate for the rest of the week-end. I also know at first hand that a specialist charity allows €16 / hour (gross) for suitably qualified nurses caring for a single child with special needs.

On this basis then,

8 x €16 = €128
Overnight (say 8 hours) = €75
8 x €16 = €128 or €331 / 24 hours incl overnight allowance.

For your week-end, based on the above,

Friday (say 7:00pm to 11:00pm) 4 x €16 = €64
Overnight (11:00pm to 7:00am) €75

Saturday (7:00am to 11:00pm) 16 x €16 = €256
Overnight (11:00pm to 7:00am) €75

Sunday (7:00am to 11:00pm) 16 x €16 = €256
Overnight (11:00pm to 7:00am) €75

Total €801 gross for 60 hours skilled, professional attendance.

I'm not saying that's what you should charge, but the rates quoted previously are pitifully low and don't reflect either the responsibility being assumed or the training required to assume that responsibility IMHO.

Hi, the inmo website has information on reccommended rates for registered nurses. However, if your duties are going to be more in a health care assistant capacity rather than nursing duties then maybe you could adjust them accordingly.

Hi, Thanks for above replys, this is only the 2nd time I have used this site, and I must say its excellent. Thankyou Emiso & mathepac, you have definately given me some good guidance. I guess what is best is to have a good chat/negotiation with family, and come to a result that suits all. You are right mathepac, these are long hours, albeit bunched together, and I will have the ultimate responsibility of looking after two peoples lives. Emiso the position would be more health care assistant work as family are frequently in attendance, which is nice. Its a great dilemma to have, and best there is some work at the end of it. Thanks again.
