My friends owe and live in a ground floor apartment and at the beginning of December sustained a large amount of damage due to a leak coming from the apartment above. some of the damage is contents and some structural / fixtures / fittings etc. The contents insurance has not been a problem however the block insurance claim is still ongoing. The management company arranged for an insurance assessor to come out and assess damage and they were told to get estimates for repairs. All estimates were sent in to the assessor by mid Jan however to date no response. Is this normal? If not what are their options? Any advice much appreciated.

Unfortunately most property companies have to be pushed into moving a claim forward. A lot of claims departments are busy this time of year so a bit of persistance often pays off. Your friend should get the name of the insurance company and a policy number from the management company and start phoning the company regulary for updates. They should also find out what excess is on the policy (this can be quite high with these type of policies) and if an assessor has been out to see the damage they could also try phoning that assessor and asking has the report being sent back to the company.

Be aware that in a number of cases when the claim is settled the cheque is issued to the management company and you will need to chase them to release the cheque to you.

they can take as long as they like we have a claim in with quinn since last july they have dragged it out they have said they will pay out but god knows when .
will never use quinn again think they are the worst insurance company .
