VW Passat - Loud engine

I've a 98 VW Passat, 1.6.

Recently, the engine sounds really loud at higher speeds of about 60mph or more. I've never noticed it before and have owned the car for a number of years. It doesn't sound abnormal or anything - just a regular engine running. But in surround sound!

Does anyone have any idea what this could be?

Exhast system leaks, silencer baffles gone, expansion box blown?

Engine grew up and is now a 3.0 litre V6?

Thanks. I checked the oil and she's all topped up so I don't think it's that. A friend suggested the exhaust. I guess she'll be off to the garage this week then!
