Hi,
I should be JEON 53 Now !
Question : My 19 year old son is on a VEC Course, PLC Fetac 5. Todate we have received nothing from the VEC Grant. Todate, he is paying student rent from his savings from JSA, and food from SVDP.
What happens when is course finishes in May, Can he apply for JSA ?
In fairness he has applied for weekend work for Christmas everywhere.
We have another son to BTEA, If he gets his F7, he has a job in Canada. What a waste !

If his course has finished and he hasn't found work, then he can apply for JSA. If he's living at home he will be means-tested on parental income (if SW is the only income then there is unlikely to be any means assessed anyway), and at 2011 rates, the maximum entitlement for a 19 year old is €100 pw.

If the course lasts more than one year and he's on summer holidays from the course, then he won't be eligible for JSA.

It's only a nine month course, That is Sept 2011 to May 2012, he will need to apply for a Fetac 6 course in March, at a different college. He will be available for work from May. We will not be able to support him, Can he re-apply for JSA ?

The only reference to PLC courses in the Jobseekers Allowance Operational Guidelines states that students are disqualified from JA for the summer if the PLC course lasts longer than 1 year.

There is no reference to finishing one course and starting another and disqualification, so it would appear that he will be able to apply next May.
