TAX ID as a sole trader

Hi all,

I've been operating as a sole trader for a couple of years now under a company name registered with the CRO.

Today I was asked for a TAX ID from a multinational client so I could be registered on their books for payment. I gave them my PPS but they say they can't accept that. But that is the only number I've used in connection with my business and revenue. Should I have a separate TAX ID?

Thanks

Are they under the impression that you're operating as a limited company?
I've made it clear to them that I am a sole trader - though I am dealing with one person, and she then is dealing with their internal accounts office, so perhaps something is getting lost in translation.

It's just that the first time I read your post, your phrase "a company name registered with the CRO" made me think you were operating as a company.

I didn't mention that to them. Just mentioned it here in case it was pertinent. I've done business with them several times in the past, just not directly.

Could they be looking for your VAT number? Not sure what other tax number be relevant for them.
