Sound and audio for windows XP

With my wealth of knowledge in IT i decided to give a bash of cleaning up my C-drive to improve the speed of my PC. I managed to wipe the sound and audio clear off.
Is it a matter of just downloading software again from the web?
If so could someone with knowledge advise of where to go to get this. I'm afraid of downloading from a dodgy site.
Windows XP is what I'm using.

Hi There,

If you right click on My Computer, then go to Properties, then go to Hardware, then Device Manager then go down to Sound, Video & device controllers.

You should then be given the option to update your sound drivers as it should pick up there is a problem with them.
