we have an inspection coming up at work where some one from Social Welfare and the Revenue commissioners will be attending. Has anyone any experience of these and what should we expect?

Are they attending at the same time?(That would be odd)

I rarely seem social welfare inpection but normally they may be checking out maybe some part-time employee who is also claiming legally(cross checking hours they work).

I would not be very worried by social welfare inpection if everything in order

It is not odd at all for both revenue and SW to carry out inspections together as there are Joint Investivation Units between both depts.
It may be a general inspection of the books (PRSI and Revenue issues) and they normally would tell you what they need so that you have the accounts to hand. It may also be acting on a report of abuse of the Revenue/Social welfare codes. It is generally a very detailed audit of the books from a tax/PRSi point of view
