We need to buy an orthopedic chair for my mam - costs c. €4.2k

For the 20% tax relief purposes, is it ok if I split the costs with my two siblings, i.e. if we each pay €1.4k each and then each of us claims the 20% on our portion?

Thanks Mugs,

Sorry for being pedantic. The site that you provided confirms that one can pay the medical expenses of a family member. I just wanted to be absolutely sure that it's ok to divide said expenses between siblings?

Thanks Danny - that may be an option - it's just that I've been asked whether the other is possible or not?!:) [That's why I'm getting into the weeds here!!]

Revenue will want the invoice & it will show the full amount.

You could ask the supplier to give you two receipts with 50% on each - but then there's a discrepancy between true value & the apparent amount paid. Or even, from Revenue's standpoint, two claims for the same item.

Yes you could submit letters explaining, but why give yourself the hassle.

Let Jane buy the thing & Joe pays 50% of the net amount to Jane.

Keep it simple.
