Separate assessment joint return

My wife and I are currently separately assessed but my wife only worked for part of 2017.

I pay income tax on a rental property so I’m wondering if we can do a joint form 11 return for 2017 as separate assessment.

My wife only worked for part of 2017 so I would hopefully get a rebate / reduction in liability

My understanding is that you will both be required to do a return. As you are separately assessed any unused rate bands should transfer to you from your wife.
