Have to put a metal beam in ceiling of new build to support floor joices. It is over an open plan area and the span is 5mts. With the RSJ the carpenter can only get about 50mm of the joice sitting into the the beam each side which isnt alot. Someone mentioned to me, welding two pieces of channel iron back to back which would allow more of the timber to be supported.

Anyone any thoughts on this. Would it be any less secure than an rsj in terms of flexing in the middle, taking the load etc?

I suggest you seek professional advice on this matter. Its not really a question we can fully answer here. A lot depends on the structual loadings, this beam will carry and the supports to carry this beam. The consequesnses could potenetially prove fatal if incorrect. Are you a self builder by any chance? What part of the countrr are you in, and people here may be able to recommend a Structural Engineer.
