Replacing An Open Fire Place

I'm thinking of closing up my open fire place in my living room. I've been burning coal in it during the winter months and this also helps heat my domestic hot water by means of a back boiler.

Any suggestions as to what to put in it's place in order the heat the living room during the winter months?

I can't see that working.

I suppose that depends on the output

Could be short sighted as people will soon be reverting to solid fuel as oil and gas becomes more and more expensive.
