Repair .xls file?

Hi i have an excel spreadsheet saved on my usb key... all of my excel documents will open except for one!.... it is not locked and i have access to it. I keep getting the error:

"'sample.xls' cannot be accessed. The file may be read-only, or you may be trying to access a read-only location. or the server the document is stored on may not be responding"

Do you know where i could get some free software to repair this file. all products online charge.. i dont want to buy a package to repair just one file.
any help would be great!

it's quite likely that your file is corrupt - have you tried copying it onto the harddrive of your computer to check if it can be read by the OS ?
 
Yeah i have tried that... and also tried renaming the file.
Is there any software that can repair a corrupt file though ?
 
Can you try and open up the file with another application.

If you right click on the file and choose Open with > select one of the other programs and see if it will open ?

Otherwise can you try and copy the file and then re-name it

OR

save the file back to the original folder where it was copied from and open it from there !
