Good morning,

We are 2 adults & 2 kids - ages 14 & 9.
Both adults are on simply connect with Laya. Last year we put kids on Essential Health 300.
We have had a diagnosis on one of the kids which will mean some occupational therapy, psychology visits in the new year.
What would be the best plan for us? Is there a kids plan available that would cover the treatments and would we get cover if the diagnosis was made during this year.

Thank you,

Hi bagpuss,

First of all, occupational therapy and psychology visits are under the heading day to day medical expenses and are allowable straight away.
No waiting applies, regardless of when the diagnosis was made.

There are a few plans worth considering with different levels of cover for these expenses. If you have an approx idea as to how many visits
will be required, you could do a rough calculation to see what plan, price and cover suits the situation.
Note; the specialists would need to be registered with the appropriate recognised body in order to qualify for claiming a refund.

1. Laya Simply Connect Plus; price 280pa; all public, private and 3 hi-tech hospitals covered. Private/hi-tech excess 150 x 1 max per
year for all admissions, day case excess 50 per procedure. Note; there is no excess to pay in any public hospital.
Good day to day cover on this plan, 50% refund for gp visits, consultant visits, dental, physio, etc.
For Occupational therapy the refund is 50% of cost of visits allowed(unlimited amount of visits).
For child psychology visits, the refund is 50% of cost of visits X 8 visits + 50% of cost of 1 assessment up to 60 euro.
Note; there is a maximum day to day expenses limit of 1000 per year. So the total amount of allowable expenses cannot exceed 1000.

2. Laya Control 600 Secure; price 237pa; all public, private(including private room) and 3 hi-tech hospitals covered. Private/hi-tech excess
600 per admission and 175 per private/hi-tech day case procedure. Note; there is no excess to pay in any public hospital.
* I included this plan as its a good price with good day to day cover. All childrens hospitals are fully covered. I know the excess of 600 is high
but it may not be relevant in a childs case when all the childrens hospitals are public and no excess applies.
Good day to day cover included. Refund of 100 per consultant visits, 40 per gp visit etc.
For Occupational therapy the refund is 40 euro per visit X 5 visits.
For child psychology visits the refund is 50 euro per visit X 8 visits.
Note; there is a generous 6,500 limit for day to day medical expenses per year.

3. Laya Control 300 Secure; price 307pa; same hospital cover and day to day cover as Control 600 Secure, only difference is the excess 300
per admission and 125 excess day case procedure. Again this excess may not be relevant as all the childrens hospitals are public and no excess applies.

4. Laya 360 Care Select; price 490pa; all public, private(including private room) + 3 hi-tech hospitals covered, no excess for the first 3 admissions or day case procedures in private or hi-tech hospitals, excellent day to day cover included.
For occupational therapy, the refund is 75% of cost X 12 visits.
For child psychology visits the refund is 90% of cost (unlimited visits).
There's 75% refund for a long list of medical expenses ie gp visits, consultant visits, physio etc etc.

5. VHI Company Plan Extra Level 2 Excess; price 379pa; all public, private and 3 hi-tech hospitals covered, private/hi-tech excess 125 per
admission and day case procedure. No excess to pay in any public hospital. Good day to day cover included.
For occupational therapy, the refund is 75% of cost of visits (unlimited visits).
For child psychology visits, the refund is 30 euro per visit X 8 visits.
There's a refund of 40 euro per gp visit, dental, physio etc and 100 refund per consultant visit.

With Laya, you can switch your child to another Laya plan at any time if you want, without penalty.
You could switch your child to VHI only at renewal date.
A child can be with VHI on their own if necessary. An adult is named on the policy, but just the child is insured.

The above list of plans offer different levels of cover and a range of options depending on the amount of total visits required in a year.
The 360 Care Select plan offers comprehensive cover with generous refunds if the number of visits and other medical expenses
justify the premium price.
