Registering Tenancy

I read somewhere that if you have a house rented out you should register the tenancy with some govt agency (can't remember the name). If you don't register the tenancy you can not claim tax relief on the interest you have paid. Is this correct or does anyone have any other info on this?
I rent out a house to a tenant but have not registered the tenancy with anyone.

I understand if you are late registering, there may be a larger fee to pay or even penalties

Late fee is 140 euro. Payment has to be made within 30 days of tenant signing lease/taking up occupancy or else late fee applies. They have bigger teeth too if landlord has left it a long time before registering.
