Hi folks, my mom has an old derelict cottage on her land that she is gifting to me, i hope to do it up and live in it eventually. how should i go about registering the property for property tax or when should i do it? should i wait till i can get it ready to live in first?

It's not liable for LPT if it's "unsuitable for use as a dwelling" . Hopefully your mother hasn't paid LPT on it?
If it's still unfit to live in on Nov 1st 2016 (the next lpt valuation date) - then it won't be liable for the following 3 years either - even if it becomes habitable before the 3 years is up. (under current rules)
