Reference checks for builders

Hi - as I'm new to the building area, I was wondering if anyone knows if there is a website that can provide a sample of reference check questions to ask clients about builders? I have alot to do but don't know where to begin?!!

Thanks Fintan. It's actually a self-build and we received a great quote from a builder but he wasn't referred by anyone. He gave me three refs in his area to contact that he has done work for..... but just wondering what type of questions - timeframe, quality etc.
