You might not be aware but since last Sunday (5 June 2005), there has been a change to the Treatment Benefit Scheme, operated by the Department of Social and Family Affairs.

The Treatment Benefit Scheme provides those who qualify with a contribution towards certain dental, optical and aural treatment. In order to qualify, you must have enough PRSI contributions.

In the past - the contribution towards your dental/aural/optical treatment was only for treatment carried out in Ireland.

Since 5 June 2005, you may now shop around (within the EU) to find the best value for money before you decide where to have your treatment.

As with the Treatment Benefit Scheme as it currently operates in Ireland, the same restrictions on the type of treatment, costs covered etc. will apply to treatment in another EU state. In these cases, the Department will pay an amount equivalent to the rate paid for treatments carried out in Ireland or the amount actually paid for the treatment (whichever is the lower).

You can read more about the Treatment Benefit Scheme on Oasis here:
Staff in Treatment Benefit Section in Dept. Social and Family Affairs can answer any questions you have about the scheme.

Useful information to be aware of - particularly if you are planning to travel to another EU country this year for dental, optical or aural treatment.
