Problems Depositing UK Cheque

Myself and my wife received a small inheritance about 18 months ago. As it was in sterling, Anglo at the time were offering a one year fixed rate of 6.5% so we went for that and hoped sterling would weaken a bit in meantime.

Anyhow I recently closed this account and today went to lodge the sterling cheque into our Ulster Bank c/a in the branch only to be told that it could take 6 to 8 weeks to clear our a/c. One week I can understand but 6-8 seems a bit mad.

Is this reasonable or has anybody else had a similar problem

I lodged a sterling cheque for a small amount with AIB before. I remember them saying it would take about 3-4 weeks.
6-8 weeks sounds excessive!

I lodge sterling cheques to my AIB account fairly regularly and they are cleared within a couple of days. They always tell me that the cheque has to be sent to my own branch but it never takes more than a few days. These are usually dividend cheques. I don't know if this makes a difference.
