I just want to know if you visit a consultant privately and he sends you for a selection of blood tests. Perhaps 8/9 different things tested for. Are you charged per item tested or per phlebotomists ( spelling??) fee. What kind of cost can you expect for this. Finally does health insurance pay for it

You probably need to check this out carefully from a few different angles:

1. Check with your health insurer and get their advice re your plan, cover etc.

2. If you have the option of going to a public hospital or your G.P. it would most likely be a lot cheaper as the private hospitals can be very expensive for these.

3. Besides health insurer check out tax relief on revenue.ie

In my case I go to my GP and get charged 30 euro for a blood test. The number of things tested for does not affect the price.
I get a 15 euro refund on my health insurance policy once the excess has been met. But this will be different depending on the specifics of your policy.

It depends on the tests: some of the simpler ones are bundled together in the 30 euro fee price as discussed above.
More specialist ones are priced per test, for example the PSA test for me is 43 euro.
Call places like the Hermitage Private clinic and ask them, I go there for my PSA test, with a letter from my doctor, was there yesterday, in and out in 13 minutes for 43 euro, same price as going through my GP, with results an hour later faxed to doctor....as opposed to waiting maybe 10 days....
Covered by my insurance: look up your policy online.
