Hi

I know a person can claim tax back if they pay fees for someone else. But like medical expenses, can the person themselves in the nursing home claim tax back on their own fees......they have paid tax all their life, obviously getting pensions now....or does person only get refund if currently paying tax?

The person has to be currently paying tax in order to make the claim !!

Of course the patient can claim tax relief on their own medical or LT care costs.

But often elderly people don't have much of an income tax liability, so the tax relief is of little benefit to them.
