Paying deposit to a bathroom installer. Best way to protect myself

We're doing up our bathrooms and got quotes from a few different people. The guy who we think is best value is looking for a 50% deposit. I know I'll have to pay something up front, but 50% seems a bit steep to me.

I'm just wondering how much i.e. what percentage of the agreed cost, are other people are paying currently? And, how are people "protecting" this money? For example, if you transfer the money to the builders account, and he does a runner / business goes bankrupt before starting my job, then I've lost that money. Just wondering what other people to doing to secure their deposit. Is paying the deposit via Credit Card an option?

How much is the job ?
You could pay for supplies directly to suppliers which could act as a deposit.
The guy you chose may not accept credit card payments.

The best way to protect your money is to use someone who's been in business locally for years and who comes well recommended to you. I'd value those above price alone.
