Parental Leave - Entitlement

Hi

I am looking for some advice on Parental Leave entitlement. I have been working for the same Private Company for 12 years. My child will be 8 later this year and I have never claimed parental leave.

I do not really want to take parental leave now as it would not be compatible with my current role but I would not rule it out in the future.

My question is, if I apply for Parental leave now, can I postpone the taking of this leave? Does this simply come down to the Employer agreeing to it and once agreed is it valid forever?

All advice welcome as I don't want to approach Employer until I know my entitlements.

Here is the relevant page on citizensinformation about your entitlements.
Parental leave is only available up to when you child is 8.
You are not entitled to it when your child is 9 or over.
