I've been thinking recently about returning to study but my current work/business timetable doesn't suit day or night. With this in mind i was thinking of trying to gain my degree with the open university, i know it takes longer but i'm in no mad hurry.

I'm looking at psychology and it could take 5 or 6 yers but i don't mind.

My only worry is, do people take these degrees seriously. Personally i would but do others and should i put my faith and 5 years of my life on the line for this ( not to mention money !!! )

BTW The British Psychological Society will accept this dergree for membership of this society and this is the representative body for psychology and psychologists in the UK.

All help welcome......

wife just back from receiving degree in psychology this past weekend
tough going but well worth it and because it is recognised she feels it could help her in future.

The OU is very well regarded academically and always scores well in the Sunday Times annual UK Uni review. I completed a BSc after 5 years in December. It's as hard or as easy as you make it for yourself. I will always highly recommend it to anyone interested in distance learning. I could never have done part-time.

From what I've heard OU course offer much greater flexibility compared to other part-time courses.

Currently in Year 1 of an OU MBA. Tough going but the flexibility is great. Also has quadruple accreditation so it comes highly recommended.

Many people I work with also going through the OU.

what i am wonering is what can i do after the degree, what areas of employment can i go into without further studies ????

That's a good question. Most people with a psychology degree specialise by doing a masters. (eg. counselling, educational psychology etc) The OU Dublin office would help you out with this. You could also talk to the universities in Ireland or slip into their careers offices.

I have been looking at doing a degree in psychology with both OU and Oscail.
Any advantages or disavnatges of one over the other? Thanks

And OU degree is ? Or recognised by BPS?

Does having a degree with BPS recognition of any use in Ireland?

I think the OU degree is. Basically you can't do much with the Oscail degree until it is recognised (Oscail are supposedly in negotiations).

Does having a degree with BPS recognition of any use in Ireland?
Well, I would imagine having a degree recognised by a professional body is of use anywhere, whereas the Oscail degree is worthless if you can't work/join the professional body

Hi Cmartin, I'm looking into doing a MBA next year. Was considering Mancheseter distance learning aswell as OU and maybe even UCD.

Could I ask you a few questions?

Is there much project work? Group or single?
Is it fully home learning or are there block classes?
Is there any study groups?
how long does it take on average?

many thanks

Latest on Oscail:

Oscail is currently preparing a resubmission taking into account suggestions made by the PSI panel last year. We will inform students of the outcome.
In the meantime, graduates of the BA programme who have completed six psychology modules have received recognition from the British Psychological Society under the Graduate Basis for registration procedure.
