Hello,

Can anybody review this product? I am thinking of buying it.

Have 2 questions: digital zoom is not available for this camera. Is that a big deal?

Can I put an 8Gb memory on that? Or maybe 4Gb?

Thank you

Forget about digital zoom it's not worth talking about.

Look at the possibility at a second hand D70. It's probably a better camera.

It is undoubtedly a better camera as it's above the D40x in the Nikon range. However the D40x is excellent as a beginner's camera - the D70 might be overkill.

Just be wary when buying second hand DLSR's that you buy from a reputable place with a guarantee - a high number of previous shutter acutations can shorten the life of your second hand camera.

There are a good range of both new and used cameras on ebay. I've just bought a Nikon D200 for a couple of hundred euro cheaper than I've seen anywhere online in Ireland so fingers crossed it will arrive! If nothing else, ebay is a good comparison price site.

Just bought a D40 as a beginners DSLR and I've been blown away. I stayed away from the D40x due to the price. :) Go for it!

What I meant was that you could probably pick up the D70 second hand cheaper than the D40 new and you will have a better camera.

You are probably right about the second hand camera but I think you would be unlucky to end up with a dud.

As a previous poster said forget digital zoom. You can crop with software afterwards to get the same effect.

If you need zoom add another lens. Sigma 50 to 200 Nikon-compatible is a good option.

Re: Secondhand D70's

Try Bermingham Cameras on Burgh Quay, D. 1. I have bought preowned DSLR cameras and lenses from them... usually 3 months warranty. No probs to date. Also, try Dublin Camera Exchange in Trinity Street, D.2., or Conns Cameras, Clarendon St., D.2. The D70 is a step up from the D40. All three won't sell you a dud intentionally.

Remember that most lenses that come with new cameras are not the Mae West. It can be worth it doing a bit of research and legwork to buy the lens separate.. do a cruise of the good camera shops and check out www.photographyireland.net for advice.

I've been recommended these guys in Hong Kong too and do intend trying them for a new lens to myself from Santa Claus... they also cover the cost of Duty and VAT if you are caught! They also sell over EBAY. Perhaps other posters to this thread have used them? You can also save dosh by purchasing in NYC... good excuse to take a trip!

If you look at kenrockwell.com, a photography blog, he gives the d40 an excellent review
