Need clarification re JB and doing VEC courses

Can some clarify this for me .If a person takes up a two year course with VEC does he just sign off for the number of weeks in that year in which the course takes place .If course is for 30 weeks then sign off for this period and return to JB after this period provided one is still eligible to receive same .
Am I correct in this thinking ,as I have got conflicting views on this .Thanks
 
More info. What type of course is it? Are you paid an allowance while on it? Does the course end after a year? Is BTEA payable while on it?
 
Thanks for reply welfairite ,realised I did not have sufficient information and details of course so rang Social Welfare office who cleared up any misunderstanding I had on situation.
