Recently in Cork area around 14 cars involved in a pile up with cars all over the place. I assume most were damaged to some extent. Wondering what should one do in such an incident assuming you were unhurt. How does one get car towed to a garage; does the garage have to be notified beforehand; also question of insurance. Most people in such a state might find it hard to plan and take action so any advice would be appreciated.

you ring your insurer if you have comprehensive cover and they tow it for you. If you don't then you can try your luck against the party that hit you. your insurers would likely have an approved repairer that they would tow the vehicle to in the absence of you knowing someone.

Storage charges are never covered under an insurance policy. So its always best the insurer bring it to one of their places.

Familiarise yourself with the guide your insurer supplied you with in your insurance pack. It's usually called "What To Do / Who To Contact In The Event Of An Accident" Store the supplied phone-numbers in your phone for your convenience.

My other half was involved in a bad accident 18 months ago. Car was not drivable afterwards. Gardai and fire brigade attended the scene. Thankfully Mr. Northie walked away. Gardaí organized for the cars to be cleared and husband's car was taken to a yard in Ballbriggan. The yard assessed the damage and gave him a value they were willing to pay for the car. Insurance company then gave a quote on value of the car. He had a set time to accept the salvage yard's offer after which he would have been charged storage costs. It took a bit more time to come to an agreement with the insurance company on value of the car. Husband got a cheque from the salvage yard and a couple of weeks later got the balance from the insurance company.

We have AA cover and have used in the past when one of our cars has broken down. Never thought of what we would do in the case of an accident. Have to say on the day the gardai and fire brigade were so helpful
