What’s cheapest way to move €20k to USA into dollars.
Is withdrawing in cash US dollars from our Irish account and physically bringing with us back to USA on trip home or doing online transfer.

This is the worst option as you will pay big currency fees, run the risk of theft or loss, and it may be confiscated on arrival in the US on suspicion of criminal activity.

I’ve used Wise on a number of occasions in the past and had no issues with it. The charges and exchange rate are clearly set-out and the transfer was more or less instant. The amounts were smaller, in the region of €1,500/€2,000.

If you bought €20,000 US dollars cash you would get about $20,720 - and risk loss/theft/questions

If you used transfer wise to make a transfer to a US bank account, €20,000 would see $21560 land in the US account a few hours later.

Cash is by far the most expensive and riskiest form of currency transfer

You can set up a Wise account online, then send your money in there, then convert it to dollars when the exchange rate is good and send it to your US bank account.
Also, Wise pays interest on funds held in their accounts.
