Mobile contract question

I received a text from Meteor last week saying they were "upgrading my plan" and from late May I would have unlimited calls etc etc etc". Then it said "if you'd like to choose a new plan or withdraw without penalty you need to call this number to cancel within one month of this text".

Can a company enforce a contract by negative confirmation? I've never come across this before - I always thought I would have to sign or else confirm by voice recording etc etc?

Yes, they can. That's covered in the T&Cs when you signed up. It's common enough with a few of the other providers as well. On the bright side, the change in conditions means they must allow you exit the contract without penalty should you choose to do so. Time to shop around for the best deal.
