Late late invoice

Evening, I got some work done by a contractor a number of years back, now he comes with an invoice going back over 4 years am I obliged to pay even do I will as I always pay my bills, some of the work was as a subbie for a company of mine that has ceased trading.
I will still honour my debt, I just want to get him to wise up.
I have asked this guy on Numerous occasions for my bill he is so laid back its unreal, and I believe he is owed a small fortune due to this.

He has 6 years to invoice you. But waiting 4 years is extracting the urine.

He is doing that alright, I just want to ram the money down his throat and tell him to wise up, I wasn't sure of the time frame thanks for your input.

@Annie51, as I said in my OP I always honour my debt, and will do for my Co that has ceased trading , so he will be paid.
