Hi There
5 of us are heading to California in September for 12 nights. I've been given Las Vegas to research. I plan on surfing the net for info. any tips or recommendations from previous travellers to Vegas would be appreciated.

Cheers

Hey Grapes!

Las Vegas is a crazy place! You will have a great time there just exploring the casinos and maybe take in a show! Its an assault on the senses at night with all the lights etc on the strip! I have heard it described as a theme park for adults and its a pretty accurate description especially at night and there are good and bad elements to that! Make sure you visit the Bellagio and the Venetian they are beautiful hotels and worth a visit even if you are not staying in them!

My number one tip when you are in that area is make sure you get to the Grand Canyon, save up and go in the helicopter its expensive but breathtaking and well well worth it!

Enjoy!

Make sure you see bellagio fountain, go on a gondala in little venice, roller coaster at new york, new york, lions at mgm, see treasure island show, eat in the cheesecake factory, see grand canyon and see a magic show at the monte carlo ! they are the essentials in my opinion

I will be going to Las Vegas in October - whats it like at that time of the year. Are the streets safe to walk around alone during the day

The streets are as safe as any big city. Have been to Vegas 5 times now - and am all Vegas-ed out but the only time we encountered crime on the strip was a woman who tried to pich my hubby's pocket on our way back from a show around 11pm.

Best tip for Vegas is 3 nights is plenty, the novelty wears off pretty fast! Oh and don't skimp on hotels, you can get 5* luxury for 3* prices, spoil yourself!

I was there in May and one of the highlights of my stay was the Cirque de Soleil show in Treasure Island. We bought tickets on the morning of the show at the half price booths for Mystique and is was AMAZING...the BEST show Ive ever seen. Really good value also. I've been to other C de S shows in Eurpoe, staged in the Big Top but the fact that the Treasure Island one is performed on a purpose built stage I think made the show even better. Would have loved to see 'O' in the Bellagio but i think its sold out for months and months. Hubby was open mouthed through most of it and he isnt one to be easily impressed, not really a show person at all. What these guys and girls can do is unbelievable.

The Grand Lux restaurant in the lobby of The Venetian is a cheesecake factory... WOW WOW WOW! and super value!

Stayed in the Venetian its amazing.
Drinks are free in the casino when you are gambling, and that could be a dollar every half hr into the slots..... still cant get over that haha.
Go up the Stratosphere for the views.... if you are a bit mad in the head for the amusements too haha.

Well I slept through that (Mystere I think it's called) and also through Ka (another C de S show, in the MGM) but hubby loved both of them. Each to their own I guess.

The Cirque De Soleil's show "Love" at the Mirage is a must-see for anyone who likes the Beatles. Without a doubt, the most astonishing and mind-blowing theatre event I have ever seen and worth the trip to the States alone just to experience it. I am seriously thinking of going back there again next year just to see it. It's that good.

Was there in july. Stay in Bellagio mid-week surprisingly cheap (With recession an all).If on a budget Super 8 two blocks of the strip is grand-stayed there 1st night before Bellagio. "Zumanity" very funny (and cheapest) Cirque du Soleil show, in New York, New York (defo one for a group of lads!). Centrifuge Bar in MGM Grand nice place to have a few beers at the start of the night. Found LAX in the Luxor to be best club, but depends on the night. Grand Canyon only 2 hour drive, and Hoover Dam is en route-about half hour from Vegas. Strip seems very safe, and you'll hardly need a trip Downtown, though Freemont St. is interesting, especially at night when lit up.

I had to have a double take to make sure I wasn't commenting on my own post ! I agree with everything you've said. Grand Lux, as my wife was saying was the closest to European food that we came across, in LV. That said the Cheesecake Factory in Caesars Palace is very good as well.

Stratosphere bar at the top is excellent for cocktails.

In TI, we used to play the slots that were games (like Lucky Leprechaun) as they lasted longer ;). BTW, when the waitress comes around with the free drink, always give her a dollar a drink and you will find the service to be fine. Don't tip and you'll have to chase them all over the casino !

EDIT : if you aren't a gambler (I'm not either), you could also try the 5c and 25c machines.

I'm heading to Vegas in October myself and found the following website really useful especially about hotels and offers and insider information. Just go to the message board:

I'm doing california and vegas this october!

Book directly with the hotels, try the promotions on the hotels websites we got a great deal the last time we went.

Go and see the Grand Canyon, that is top of the list. Its amazing.

Go on the thrill rides on top of Stratosphere, they are very scary but well worth the time.

Take a day and go around all of the hotels, some of them are truly amazing. Out of the top ten hotels about 7 of them are in Vegas. Mad.

Try megabucks slot machine, ya never know...........
