If, based on the number of previous claims, an insurance company refused to offer renewal of cover, is there somewhere else that will offer insurance? I'm assuming that other insurance companies won't offer cover, also based on the number of claims? Any advice on how to get house insurance if this were the case?

Thanks

You might have a major problem getting home insurance. If you're existing company is refusing to renew, then chances are no one else will quote either. You could contact the Insurance Federation to see if they can make representation on your behalf, but at the end of the day there is no onus on a house insurer to give you cover.

Were all claims of the same type? if so, you might be able to prove to your current insurers that you have taken serious steps to minimise risk of a further claim and they might be prepared to renew with either a large excess or an exclusion of cover of that specific peril.

if you have a mortgage, it is a condition that you have house insurance and lender may be able to help.

As others have said there is no obligation on any insurer to offer renewal of any policy except TP motor.

this is an issue that most people dont realise

Most companies offer a two/three strike rule and then your gone. At the end of the day insurance companies are out to make money. Alot of people think they should do this and that however unless they are making money they dont want to know

If you have had say three previous claims you are a bad risk and therefore given the average cost of house insurance circa €300 per year, you are always going to cost them money if you are going to claim constantly as the average cost of a claim will be >€1000

Thank you all.

Each of the previous claims were of different types, and the one we are currently debating about is also of a different type to the two previous. But based on the amount of loss suffered on this occassion versus the increase in premuim, or the non-renewal factor, we may decide to to just suffer the loss and not make a claim this time.
