How to locate the exact position and length of an existing RSJ?

Hi all - does anyone know of a device that would detect the exact position and length of an existing RSJ? A friend has suggested that my only option is to break a couple of small holes in the ceiling. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

It's a bit expensive, but quality rarely comes cheaply. These things are available at virtually any good DIY shop. But I assume you also have no shop detector, so try Amazon for that, too!

I do like my gadgets, so have one of those bosch detectors. It's pretty good, a lot better than the cheaper detectors I have tried.
