Hospital charge while on illness benefit

I don't know if I am missing something here and hoping that someone can explain to me

My brother was taken into hospital and was there for three weeks, he does not get paid sickness benefit from his job so had to claim illness benefit from Social welfare.
He does not get paid for the first six days and should get 188 for the other two weeks.

Now this is the part I don't understand, he received a hospital bill yesterday for 750 euros.
How is someone supposed to pay that when they have only received 376 euros from illness benefit?

He has never claimed illness benefit before so is totally clueless, as am I.
He has not returned to work as yet as he is still unfit.

There is a daily statutory charge of €75 per day for a stay in a public hospital, subject to a maximum charge of €750. The hospital is obliged to raise this bill and would have no visibility on your brother's financial situation. It is completely unconnected with the illness benefit claim.
I presume when he is back in work he will be in a position to pay the hospital bill
