Anyone have any suggestions as to a good insurer/broker from whom to get home insurance from for a house built in 1904? You can't get online quotes for houses over 100 years old and my experience in the last few years has been that the companies that generally provide competitive quotes (123.ie, getcover.ie etc) are extremely expensive for old houses. I spent hours and hours ringing around last year - eventually got an ok quote via a broker - but would be interested in saving money and time this year if anyone can recommend a broker who specialises in late 19th/early20th century houses.

Hi txirimiri,
Did you try Allianz direct? They tend to supply house quotes for houses over 100 years old and tend not to be too expensive either.

Did you ever get a reasonable quote from anyone?

I'm in a similar situation: I'm currently with Allianz, and their latest renewal quote is very high. As you say, it seems to be hard to get quotes for property of this age (ours is just over 100 years old), which seems hard to believe, as there are plenty of houses of that age around.

Any suggestions, anyone?

Hi,
For what its worth, we got a quote in March 2012 through AA Insurance (brokers) for a two bedroom house built in 1870. Premium 326pa is with Zurich Insurance. Insured for 160,000 Contents 30,000. It may be worth a try.

There is a broker in Dublin, Finsure.ie
I know they do holiday homes, chalets, thatched properties etc, so they might be able to help.
I'm not affiliated with them in any way but my parents use them for holiday home insurance.

Thanks - I'll give both of these a call.

I've got a quote in the meantime from RSA which is considerably cheaper. It seems the age of a house mightn't be such a big issue after all, if you ring up, though I know some companies just won't give any quote.

Hi,

We have a related problem on a house we are buying. It's 90 odd years old and we have been told that no insurance company will touch it unless it has been re-roofed. The roof appears to be the original and is in excellent condition. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi,
Our roof was never replaced, 142 yrs old, we were asked about it and explained that it was fine, never leaked so if it's not broke why fix it. This was accepted and didn't seem to be a problem with the above brokers re getting a quote. I suppose being upfront about it seemed to work in a positive way.

In saying that, we are living in the house over 30 yrs, so we are sure it doesn't leak. I don't know about your situation, buying a house and relying on the sellers word regarding the roof, but it may be worth a try.

I have to say I'd be slightly unsure about this. You would be hard-pressed to insure modern built house of the same value. Did you fully read any statement of fact and policy wording that you received? I would expect there to be certain warranties regarding the age of the property. I think both Allianz and Bechmark who do these properties have a minimum rebuild cost they insist on being applied.
