Hi,
We are a couple aged 61 and 56 and with Healthplus Excess for the past few years.
My husband has a chronic leukaemia for 12 years which is under control and he doesnt use
private health insurance for this. I had surgery and radiotherapy for breast cancer
last year in the Mater Private which was all covered by insurance.
I'm wondering if we could save some money and get a cheaper plan with close to the
same benefits of the Healthplus Excess, due for renewal on 22/01/2019.
Thanks
Barbara

Hi barbara62,

The following VHI plans are worth considering, Health Access, is nearest coverwise, just in respect of orthopaedic cover - knee and hip
replacement surgery, cataract eye surgery in private or hi-tech hospitals. Other plans listed have 80% cover for these surgerys but have better
day to day cover and lower excess amounts. Details as follows;

1. VHI Health Access; price 1613pa; all public, private and 3 hi-tech hospitals covered; private/hi-tech excess 125 per admission or day case
procedure. 90% cover for orthopaedic and cataract surgery. Good day to day cover included, refund of 60 per consultant visit, 25 per gp visit,
physio etc. - the first 100 not allowed.

2. VHI Company Plan Extra Level 1; price 1548pa; all public, private and 3 hi-tech hospitals covered; no excess to pay in any private or hi-tech
hospital for any admissions or day case procedures. Excellent day to day cover on this plan, 1 euro excess, refund of 75% for consultant visits,
75% for gp visits, dental and optical etc. Note; there is 80% cover for orthopaedic and cataract surgery in private and hi-tech hospitals on
this plan. The shortfall for a hip or knee replacement surgery is 3000 approx. To avoid this 3k charge, the Blackrock Clinic does not pass this
shortfall amount onto the patient.

3. VHI PMI 38 14; price 1661pa; all public, private and 3 hi-tech hospitals covered, no excess to pay in any private or hi-tech hospital for any
admissions or day case procedures. Excellent day to day cover on this plan, 1 euro excess, refund of 130 per consultant visit, 40 per gp visit,
etc. Note; there is 80% cover for orthopaedic and cataract surgery in private and hi-tech hospitals on this plan. Like option 2 above, to avoid
the 3k shortfall charge, Blackrock Clinic does not pass this charge onto the patient.

4. VHI PMI 07 10; Price 1188pa; all public, private and 3 hi-tech hospitals covered, private or hi-tech hospital excess 150 x 1 max per year
for all admissions and day case excess 50 per procedure. Good day to day cover included on this plan, refund of 50% for consultant visits,
gp visits, dental, physio etc. Again 80% orthopaedic cover where shortfall can be avoided if surgery is done in Blackrock Clinic.

5. Laya Simplicity plan; price 1231pa; all public, private(including private room fully covered) and 3 hi-tech hospitals covered, private/hi-tech
excess 100 x 2 max per year for all admissions, day case excess 50 per procedure. Good day to day cover on this plan, 50% refund for
consultant visits, gp visits, etc - the first 100 not allowed. 100% cover for orthopaedic and cataract surgery in private and hi-tech hospitals
on this plan, no excess, no shortfall applies on this surgery.

6. Laya Simply Connect; price 1100pa; all public, private and 3 hi-tech hospitals covered, private/hi-tech excess 150 x 2 max per year for all
admissions, day case excess 50 per procedure. Good day to day cover included, 1 euro excess, 50% refund for consultant visits, gp,dental
etc - subject to a max refund of 500 per year.(50% of 1000 = 500).
100% cover for orthopaedic and cataract eye surgery in private and hi-tech hospitals, no shortfall.

There's a few alternative options to consider with savings to achieve, without losing cover.

Many thanks for your reply Snowyb. Its great to have narrowed the options to
just 6. I'll have a good look at them this afternoon and make a decision then.
Much appreciated.
