Simply Connect is an ideal plan that ticks all the boxes, especially for older people. There is no shortfall to pay for hip or knee
replacement surgery. The private hospital excess is capped at 150 x 2 for all private admissions.
The only real reasons for switching, would be if his day to day medical expenses exceeded 50% of 1000 = 500 per year.
Simply Connect Plus @ price 1250 is a good alternative with extra day to day cover.
Secondly, if he had a preference for a private room in a private hospital, Simplicity plan would be a good alternative @ 1231pa.
Otherwise, I would stay with Simply Connect which is reduced in price to 1100 from 1 July 2018.
My own parent is on Simply Connect, which works very well and meets all their medical needs.
