Giving Notice on a 12 month contract

I am returning to a former employer on a contract basis. I knew where I stood in terms of giving and receiving notice as an employee. I don't know my rights and responsibilities as a self employed contractor.

I am not sure it will work out and I really don't want to be obliged to work there for the 12 months if I hate it. Can anyone advise if there is a standard set of rules or if it depends on the wording of the contract?

No-one wants an employee who hates their work environment. It does all depend on the contract, but you'll find some provisions for early termination on either side.

1 or 2 weeks notice would be the norm for 12 month contracts. Some may be 4 weeks notice, but I wouldn't sign up to anything longer than that.
