Gas fire

Hi all, I moved into my house over a year ago now but have yet to get a fire in. I was about to get a gas fire but since the price in gas is to go up by 34% I am now thinking of just having an open fire. Question is what do I need to do? There is a pipe coming up from the bottom of the fire place I take it thats for a gas fire. Do I just need to cut this back and seel it? and then just get the bits and pieces I need for a normal open fire?

Cheers.

Hi Whiplash, I believe you will need to get a Bord Gais registered fitter to modify the gas pipe work, details [broken link removed]. Also, if the fireplace was built to take a gas fire, it may not be as simple as just inserting an open fire. Is there a flue liner?
