Finding studs on walls

I have alot of mirrors/shelfs/units etc that need to be professionally hung on my walls. I was gonna buy one of those stud detectors from woodies. Are they worth while? do they work?

and also, do you know any pro's that can do this kind of stuff, like a company or something? All my experience with friends/family and drills has been disastrous
