Engine Overheating/Boiling Over

Howdi,

Can anyone offer a prognosis on the following:

Car running for between 5-10 minutes before all of the engine coolant boils-off under massive pressure back out through the coolant reservoir.

Don't think it is the water pump because that was replaced with the timing belt 20k ago. Not the fan belt as that is still intact, however the fan is not now turning on after the engine is turned off which it used to do if it was running hot. It could be the thermostat which is electric in this model Golf.

P.S. 97 Golf MkIII

Has anyone any similar experiences or any advice they can offer?

Ta Very Much

I would say the head gasket is gone.

Take off the oil filler cap and see if there is an off white residue, Signs of water getting into the oil.

Don't drive the car or you will finish the engine all together.

Thanks Frank,

Had a look and couldn't see any residue, if the head-gasket is gone what kinda money are we talking about? I have this sinking feeling that its gonna be beyond economical repair!!

Depending on the type fitted ,Could be the water pump - the impeller could have seperated from the shaft so everything looks normal from the outside!. Had the same problem with a Passat

You are just going to have to get the engine pulled apart to see.

Hopefully something cheap and easy.
Let us know how you get on.

Frank,

It was the thermostat, had wedged itself shut and was causing allkinds of havoc. Just took the thermostat out and hey presto!

Thanks for the advice though lads & lasses
