Bit of a storm in US Media the last 2 weeks over an article on ESPN's excellent Grantland website about a mysterious inventor who invented a "scientifically superior" golf putter. Upon digging into the inventor's past the journalist discovered that the inventor was not all she appeared to be (professionally or otherwise).

Anyway here's the article so you can all make your own minds up

Any chance of a summary of the punchline?

That link leads to a beast of an article.

Any chance of a summary of the punchline?

Writer for Grantland, part of the ESPN network, looks to and gets commissioned to write an article about a golf putter, based on claims made in an infomercial.

The inventor of the putter commited suicide around the same time, but before publication of the article. When published, Grantland got a huge backlash on social media, specifically for a perceived insensitivity towards the transgender community.

I haven't read the article, just the Grantland's editorial response to the criticism.

I just read both. It's a sad story and, unfortunately, reinforces some negative stereotypes.
The editorial response is spot-on.
