Do you need a solicitor to pay off a mortgage?

As the title says, do you need a solicitor to pay off a mortgage?

I remember reading threads about it in the past but I cannot find them.

No.
You pay the mortgage balance off.
Then you get the lender removed from the deeds.
You can do the latter yourself to avoid paying the lender to do it if you want.
