do we need an accountant for self assessment?

Hi there
The OH went freelance in July after two years in a staff job. We're hoping to sort his tax ourselves through ROS rather than using an accountant. Is there an idiots guide on this page or any other as to what we need to do between now and October 31? Or are we being naive and should we use an accountant for safety?
thanks

If he went freelance this year, you don't have to do anything between now and 31 October, as Preliminary Tax regulations do not apply in the first year of a start-up.

Has he registered for Income Tax with Revenue?

There is a lot of helpful information on the Revenue website, and that of the Itish Taxation Institute. While you have time, read through anything that applies to you, and decide then if you think you can manage. There is no rule that says you have to have an agent.

Thank you for that. In relation to this year... I should have made clear that he was freelance before and paid tax as a freelancer for three years. Then he took a staff position for two years and is now freelance again, since July. Does this make a difference? IE he was registered before... then went onto a company's books, back into the paye system for two years, got a P45 from there in July and sent it into revenue to inform them he was freelance again... is he still considered a start up? Thanks a million

Sending a P45 into Revenue doesn't inform them that he is now freelance again.

If he deregistered as a sole-trader when he took up employment then he will need to re-register. If he didn't deregister then he won't have to do anything as he has already been considered a sole trader by Revenue.
