Hi,
I'd be grateful for any help with the following.
My parents have a 7 month old ****zu(i'm not sure of correct spelling) bitch. They are having huge difficulty house training her & are tearing their hair out.Has anybody any experience with a problem like this.My sister has even considered a dog psychologist-any recommendations in the Cork area?
We're desperate!

Hi JohnnyBoy,
Any help here http://www.perfectpaws.com/crt.html?
I trained my dog using a version of this and it's idiot-proof (me being the idiot...).

Off topic, did you hear the one about the zoo with just one dog?
It was a sh*t zoo.

Sorry, only joke I know, too hard to resist.....

Have they tried the training discs you can buy them in the pet store, there a start and they get your dog listening to you. Dog trainers are very good also if you can afford it costs around 20-30 euro per hour.

Give Jan Fennell's 'The Dog Listener' (book) a go ... gives a good insight into doggie motivation and behaviour which an essential basic for all dog training. Have trained three dogs with it (and one with the 'old fashioned' way ... choke chains, etc.) It's a pretty good reference for laying down the 'ground rules'. You'll still need a lot of patience though (especially with the dimmer breeds like ****zu).

You might want to consider a session with a professional trainer. There's a list of trainers here:
http://www.apdt.co.uk/trainers_area.asp?area=Eire
We used Julie Holmes of Tag n Rye and learned a huge amount from her.
From what I recall, we paid about 100 euro for one session of 2 hours or so. It's really a matter of training the owner. It sounds a lot but it was well worth it in our case. (I have no connection with Julie, other than the fact that I'm a happy customer.)
Also, you might want to watch "it's me or the dog" on Channel 4. I can't remember if it's on Tuesday or Wednesday evening. The situations can be quite extreme but the basic principles used are the same every time.
Good luck!

Hi there

You could try these two places for training. Tara and Lisa of Dog Training Ireland are excellent and do public and private classes. Check out http://www.dogtrainingireland.ie and then you have the behaviourist Maureen Byrne of Dogs Behaving Badly at [broken link removed]

I have personal experience of these two as I run a small animal related business and they are both great. Check out my site at the links page for more links [broken link removed] and also check out http://www.irishanimals.ie for more info.

Hope this helps!

I clicker trained my dog who was a stray with very bad habits...It worked for us. To this day he will go in his bed or sit etc for the clicker sound. Google it, Lots of info available re. clicker training on the net.

I went to a dog psychologist once and it was a disaster. He bit me! Reckon he was barking mad.
