If Ireland goes bust and can't pay depositors (yeah I know, highly unlikely and all that) but if it does go bust - and/or leaves the Euro (yeah, right, also unlikely), but if something like that happens, and you have a deposit account with a foreign bank like Rabo or NIB. Will your deposit be safe?

Anybody? The silence is ominous.

I suspect nobody knows what would happen to Euro-denominated deposits if Ireland leaves the Euro. Presumably an Act would be passed to provide for all Euro deposit liabilities of Irish banks to be re-denominated into New punts or whatever.
As for Euro-denominated deposits in foreign banks, you probably have to read the small print, or ask them directly

Yeah, the answer is nobody knows. It is hard to see a situation where the ECB, IMF and Irish government would let such a situation arise.

One would think that deposits with a foreign bank are 'safer' in such a situation.
