Am looking at getting a whole Family Tree/Genealogy search done as a present for a friends 40th Birthday. Want a really good and thorough piece of work done so will get a professional to do it. Have done a good few google searches but I can't find anything that says what the typical cost might be...anyone have any idea what it might cost ?

Charlie from Fair City seems quite good at these, try giving him a call, care of RTE.

If not, what about contacting the following (no ties, found in web search, they're a Trinity College campus company)

I'd imagine you'd need to supply at a minimum info about parents, grand parents - places & dates of birth, addresses etc, so can you enlist his/her wife to get this info (assuming you want this as a surprise).

The Cost
We only accept commissions where an initial assessment shows there is a strong possibility of tracing your family further.
• Assessment €38 (or US$40)
• Minimum deposit we accept for research is €195
•Standard/Typical research project will cost €360

Don't know where you are Portboy, besides rmelly's advice, the National Library in Dublin also has a list of genealogists. AFAIK, it's quite expensive.

Gilbert Library in Dublin is a good starting place, if in Dublin, or willing to do it yourself. Also there are genealogist centres throughout the country - some have an online service - again these places are expensive.
