I’m currently shopping around for a new Nissan Quasqui 1.5 diesel and have done some research into importing one from the UK.
I’ve done up some calculations but I’m just wondering are the correct or have I overlooked any other costs.
I’d be grateful for your input.

UK price ex works £14,899

UK price ex works £14,899 – 17% Vat = £12366.17
à = € 15635.57 (approx)
CO2 Emissions = 139
à VRT = 16 %
According to revenue’s on-line calculator OMSP = €20,306
à VRT = €3248
VAT @ 21 on €15635.57 = €3283.47

Therefore total cost = €22167.04

Irish Price ex works €25,395

Saving of €3227.96 ????

If he buys it up north, he wont have to pay any of the ferry, accom costs etc.

Thats excatly what I was thinking.

Try Donnelly Motors, they are on web they have a few places (Multi Franchise Dealership), most of Garages up North will be keen to do business, sales up there are also down. The other issue is warranty, not sure if Nissan offer 2 or 3 year warranty in South, its 3 years in North. I am looking at BMW, the big swing for me was I can buy a 2nd hand 08 up North and still have a warranty that is longer than in South if I bought brand new vehicle here, the BMW warranty is 2 years in South and 3 years in the North.

If you go to Boucher Rd in Belfast you have quiet a few main car dealers, Charles Hurst is Nissan dealership on Boucher Rd.

Here is [broken link removed] I found using Google, £13795

VAT is 17.5% not 17% in UK, also I think VAT will be calculated on OMP not invoice price, which seems out of hand to me.

I am a customer of Donnellys...thats only connection.

the irish price should be slighty better if there is no trade in involved, maybe 1000 euros

I have redone your calculations (I used today's ECB rate for currency conversion.) I don't think its worth while.

UK price ex works £14,899

UK price ex works £14,899 – 17.50% Vat = £12,291.68
= € 16,522.80 (approx)
CO2 Emissions = 139 VRT = 16 %
According to revenue’s on-line calculator OMSP = €20,306.00
VRT = €3,248.00
VAT @ 21 on €20,306.00 = €4,264.26

Therefore total cost = €27,818.26

Irish Price ex works €25,395.00

Loss of €2,423.26

Thanks for that mathepac,

I thought it was too good to be true!
I didn't realise the vat was charged on the osmp.

Yes VAT on OMSP, what a complete joke. If I import any other item into Ireland I pay VAT on the invoice price. If you export car from Ireland to UK VAT free, you pay VAT on the invoice price, not some notional OMSP. I really think this element should be challenged. If I were you I would go for 2nd hand car from UK/NI, make sure its over 6 months old/6,000 kms (not sure ith that should be 6months AND 6,000 kms alternatively 6Months OR 6,000 kms).

Dealers will be falling over themselves to get rid of 57(2008) reg cars in UK late August as 58 reg (2008) will be new plate on 1st September, they now have car that is 3 reg change old, being 57Reg(2008) 1st Jan to 29th Feb, 08Reg(2008) 1st March to 31st August, 58Reg(2008-2009) 1st September to February 28th 09.

mathepac,

I think you need to review your calculations.

You seem to include the OMSP in your final tally, rather than what the Euro equivalent of the Sterling price the op will pay.

ie I think you used
€20,306 + €3,248 + €4,264 = €27,818.26
instead of
€16,522 + €3,248 + €4,264 = €24,034.

Saving of approx €1,300.

Am I wrong?

teddyk.

kerryman05, the car you import will probably already include vat in the price, you only pay irish vat if the car is less than 6 months old or has less than 6000 miles on the clock.

Also if you are importing dont just get a sterling quote from the bank, check xe and currency.ie as they may be cheaper

P.S Flights and returning home arent exppensive and a quick browse will show you that cars are generally cheaper in the UK than taking a trip up north where cars are priced up

The only way to test this is try carrying out search using post codes. They say cars are cheaper in Scotland than in England, however is this is very subjective. It really depends on the make and model. If you can get access to CAP listings this will highlight regional variations within UK. The best thing to do is do search on autotrader.co.uk and find similar cars and compare prices. You then use this if you do look North.

Issac Agnew - Belfast were selling MB R320 for apprx £26,000 in Janauray, all pre-reg vehicles, it was cheapest you could find in all of UK.

Thats true, the proof is in the search so hit autotrader and look, try entering a postal code for london, glasgow, manchester and then belfast etc

Hiya,
We are also interested in buying new car from UK......I was under the impression that the VAT was payable on the invoice price, ie...21% of price we pay to garage in UK to be paid to local VRO in ireland.....Not so sure after reading all this. Finally got through to VRO in Ennis, my local one. The girl there went off to check and said that it is payable on the invoice price and that they will convert to euro and charge us. I asked her was she positive that it was not due on th OMSP.....she confirmed again that it was on invoice price. I am going to seek further clarification on it before I decide. Has anyone done this recently or have any further info on this,
many thanks,
FifiB

Ensure the euro to sterling exchange rate they charge is correct.

I think the VAT-exclusive prices here have been calculated wrongly.

If the UK VAT-incl. price is £14899.00 then to get the ex-VAT price you have to:

(14899/1.175) = £12680, not the £12291.68 quoted

If you try it in reverse you'll see what I mean.

Correct : 12680 + 17.5% (2219) = 14899
Incorrect : 12291.68 + 17.5% (2151) = 14442.72

Do you definitely not pay UK VAT on such a purchase?
