You paid their deposit and first month's rent as a loan or outright?
Presuming that you paid their first month's rent outright and that you paid the deposit with the view to getting it back when they move out, why don't you ask for all the money back straight away?
Also, for a bit of a kicker ask for 6.2% interest (Bank of Scotland's current rate on savings).
Mention the reason you need the money is to replace the decorations.

Or invite them over for Christmas drinks in your new house. Buy the tree early and stand it in a corner with no decorations. See if they comment!:D

Actually you seem to have more than the problem of the decorations with these people. Life's too short, I'd ditch them.
